Colombo: The star-studded Super 8’s Pakistan vs New Zealand encounter in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup ended in disappointment for cricket fans on Saturday as persistent rain forced the match to be abandoned without a ball being bowled. One point to each team, so this is all there to play for in the group.
The fixture at R. Premadasa Stadium was meant to kick-off Group 2 but after a light drizzle turned into heavy rain just after the toss. Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha had chosen to bat first but conditions deteriorated too much and players never made it out onto the ground. Officials waited for more than two hours before canceling the game.
This Pakistan vs New Zealand washout has big implications on the semi-final race. With no reserve day for Super 8 matches the two sides were forced to share the points, further squeezing a tight battle also involving England and Sri Lanka.
The abandoned game further complicates Pakistan’s World Cup route as now they have less margin of earning victories in their remaining matches. New Zealand, meanwhile, who still retain hope but will also have to be at their best for the next group stage matches if they are to finish in the top two.
The weather has threatened one of the other main stories of the competition – and this latest setback will only serve to further add a layer of unpredictability to the Super 8 stage. With two matches to play for both sides, the semi-final picture remains wide open — but those dropped points could yet prove crucial in deciding who makes it through.
